Spain just showed the world what happens when border deterrence collapses. Weeks after Spain’s highest court barred the immediate return of migrants intercepted at sea — and on the heels of a mass amnesty legalizing more than 600,000 illegal aliens — more than 60,000 people surged into the Spanish city of Ceuta in a single day. At least 34 died attempting the crossing.

America’s secure border rests on the same fragile footing: executive policies a future administration could reverse and court rulings that could flip at any moment. The only durable answer is statute.

The House is moving the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, H.R. 9773, which cleared the Judiciary Committee on July 21. It would write into law the asylum, detention, and parole reforms that ended catch-and-release and brought illegal crossings to record lows.

Please be ready to take up and pass this legislation the moment the House sends it over. Americans deserve an immigration system that works for them — permanently, not just for one administration.
