• Cosponsor S. 1151 to keep it that way

Nearly four million more native-born Americans have found work since immigration enforcement expanded in early 2025, according to a new analysis of federal household survey data — employment growth several times larger than in the years before. At the same time, roughly one million fewer foreign workers hold jobs, evidence that the illegal labor market is finally shrinking.

None of that progress is secure. It depends on enforcement policies that could vanish with the stroke of a pen the moment a new administration takes office. S. 1151, the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, would write the solution into permanent law by requiring every employer to verify work authorization through E-Verify. Economists at the Penn Wharton Budget Model project that mandatory verification would raise wages for authorized workers in lower-skilled jobs by five percent. The blame for illegal hiring belongs with the employers who seek out off-the-books labor — and mandatory E-Verify would end their advantage for good.
