Protect American workers — cosponsor S. 1151 to mandate E-Verify
Just 57,000 jobs were added in June, and the labor force participation rate fell to 61.5 percent — its lowest level since early 2021 — as workers gave up the search in droves. Teen unemployment stands at 14.6 percent. When hiring slows this sharply, Congress should make certain that every job opening goes to a legal worker.
S. 1151, the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, would make E-Verify permanent and mandatory for all employers, crack down on the identity theft that lets illegal workers pass themselves off as legal hires, and stiffen penalties for employers who knowingly break the law. It would protect American workers and the millions of Americans whose Social Security numbers are stolen and misused for illegal employment.
Mandatory verification would also serve as an enforcement multiplier, taking pressure off ICE and encouraging would-be illegal border crossers and visa overstayers to stay home once the message spreads that U.S. jobs are no longer easy to take. Please cosponsor S. 1151, the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, and help create an immigration system that serves the American people.
