Please support and pass S. 3790, the Protect America Act, and end the sanctuary releases endangering Americans in every region of the country.

This is not a problem confined to one state. New York released nearly 7,000 criminal aliens despite federal detainers, including individuals charged with dozens of homicides and thousands of assaults. California is holding more than 33,000 under detainers it refuses to honor. A House Oversight Committee review concluded that sanctuary jurisdictions serve as staging areas for criminal aliens nationwide.

The common thread is a deliberate policy choice: to free people the federal government has every legal right to remove, regardless of the consequences. Federal law does not require waiting until someone commits a violent crime to act. S. 3790 would require cooperation with federal detainers, shield the officers who work with federal authorities, and hold sanctuary jurisdictions accountable when their releases put the public at risk. Its House companion has already advanced through committee.

No family’s safety should depend on whether a local official decides to follow federal law — and no reform this important should be left to an executive order a future administration could erase with the stroke of a pen. I urge you to support and pass S. 3790 and help create an immigration system that works for the American people.
