Take up H.R. 2 with mandatory E-Verify intact — the moment it arrives
Since the Supreme Court’s June 30 birthright ruling, every illegal entry can also produce a U.S.-citizen child who anchors a family here, so shutting off the jobs magnet that draws those entries matters more than ever.
E-Verify would require employers to verify that every new hire is authorized to work, drying up the paychecks that pull illegal labor across the border and keeping American wages from being undercut — and makes it much more difficult to remain in the U.S. long enough to cash in on the birthright citizenship reward.
The last time H.R. 2 passed the House, the Senate let it die; this time it should take the bill up with E-Verify intact and send it to the President’s desk, writing these protections into law before a future administration can reverse them with the stroke of a pen.
