Mass immigration deepens U.S. housing crisis — cosponsor H.R. 2705
In December 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released its Worst Case Housing Needs: 2025 Report to Congress. It found that between 2021 and 2024 the U.S. foreign-born population increased by more than 6 million people — the largest short-term increase in American history. This immigration surge translated directly into a soaring demand for housing. Nationwide, two-thirds of new renter households came from immigration-driven population growth.
HUD’s data show that, across the nation, rapid household growth from immigration shocked an already tight housing market, intensifying shortages and driving rents and home prices higher. In terms of population growth, births create a gradual and long-term housing demand, whereas high immigration of primarily adults creates an immediate and overwhelming demand for housing.
High immigration rates are straining housing markets and driving up costs for American families. To relieve this housing pressure, please cosponsor the Nuclear Family Priority Act (H.R. 2705), which limits “chain migration.” This will reduce immigration numbers and ensure that rents are affordable, and the American dream of homeownership remains within reach.
