For 28 years, a Salvadoran national lived in this country under a final order of removal that was never enforced. This month he stands charged with raping a 16-year-old girl in New York — a state that has released thousands of criminals rather than turn them over to ICE for deportation.

Executive enforcement alone cannot fix this, because a future administration could reverse it with the stroke of a pen. Only Congress can make cooperation the law. S. 3790, the Protect America Act, would end the detainer refusals that shield dangerous offenders, withhold federal funds from jurisdictions that obstruct ICE, and ensure that crime victims have legal recourse against the policies that endangered them.

I’m asking you to support and pass S. 3790. Americans deserve communities where a deportation order actually means something — and an immigration system that works for the people who live here.
