Support and pass S. 3790 to shut down dangerous sanctuary policies
I urge you to support and pass S. 3790, the Protect America Act. Across the country, sanctuary jurisdictions are refusing to honor lawful ICE detainers and releasing criminal aliens back onto our streets. Americans are losing their lives because of it.
Stephanie Minter is one of those Americans. The 41-year-old single mother from Spotsylvania, Virginia, was stabbed to death at a bus stop in February by an illegal alien who had been arrested in Fairfax County more than 30 times. Fairfax police had warned local prosecutors in writing on three separate occasions that this man would eventually hurt or kill someone. That warning was disregarded. Sanctuary policy did not protect Stephanie Minter. It protected the man who killed her.
S. 3790 would require state and local cooperation with federal immigration authorities, redirect federal law enforcement grants away from jurisdictions that obstruct that cooperation, protect local officers who work with ICE from state retaliation, and provide a right of action for crime victims and their families harmed by sanctuary policies.
Local law enforcement working with federal law enforcement is not a partisan principle — it is the foundation of public safety. Please support and pass S. 3790.
